Neither a buzzword nor a country-of-origin claim can tell you whether a piece is truly well made. Quality comes from the materials, construction, finishing, design decisions and people behind it.
At Messages in Metal, jewelry isn't an abstract subject for us. We make it. Our pieces are cast, finished, personalized and inspected by our team in Great Falls, Montana.

START WITH THE DEFINITION
Fine jewelry can involve a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. A design may be modeled digitally, cast in precious metal, carefully cleaned and finished by hand, engraved with precision and individually inspected.
That doesn't make the craftsmanship less meaningful. What matters is the amount of control the maker has over the finished piece and the care taken at every stage.

Knowing where jewelry is made gives you something valuable: accountability.
When the company selling the jewelry is also closely involved in making it, questions about materials, construction, personalization and repairs can be answered by people who understand the piece.

A beautiful finish doesn't tell you what's underneath it. That's why the base material matters.
Look for clear descriptions such as solid .925 sterling silver, solid 14K gold or a clearly identified precious-metal base when a plated finish is used.
Vague descriptions such as “silver tone” or “gold color” tell you very little about what you're actually buying.
SUBSTANCE YOU CAN FEEL
Two pieces can look similar in a photograph and feel completely different in your hand.
Our standard Saint Christopher medals are approximately 2.5mm thick, giving them a substantial, reassuring feel.
Many inexpensive medals are made extremely thin to reduce material cost. Thickness affects weight, feel, durability and the overall impression of quality.
Quality is difficult to judge from a front-facing photograph. Look at the edge.

Surfaces, edges and details are cleaned and refined.
Meaning is added through engraving selected for the recipient.
The completed piece is checked before it leaves our Montana shop.
