SAINT CHRISTOPHER BUYING GUIDE

HOW TO CHOOSE A QUALITY SAINT CHRISTOPHER MEDAL.

Metal, thickness, relief, chain, bail and craftsmanship all matter. Here's what to look for before choosing a Saint Christopher medal meant to be carried for years.

START WITH WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE IN A PRODUCT PHOTO

NOT ALL SAINT CHRISTOPHER MEDALS ARE BUILT THE SAME.

Two Saint Christopher medals can look remarkably similar on a screen while feeling completely different when you hold them.

Metal thickness, total weight, relief depth, chain construction, bail strength, finishing, and how the piece was manufactured all contribute to how substantial a medal feels and how well it is suited for regular wear.

If you're buying one as a meaningful gift, those details matter.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

SIX DETAILS THAT TELL YOU WHAT YOU'RE REALLY BUYING.

01

THE METAL

Find out what the medal is actually made from—not simply what color it is. Solid sterling silver and solid gold are fundamentally different from hollow pieces, base-metal jewelry, or products whose underlying metal is not clearly disclosed.

02

THE THICKNESS

Thickness has a major effect on how substantial a medal feels. Lightweight medals may be around 1mm thick or less. Our standard Saint Christopher medal is approximately 2.5mm thick.

03

THE RELIEF

Saint Christopher imagery depends on depth. Look closely at the figure, surrounding landscape, lettering, and recessed areas. Deep, well-defined relief creates dimension that flat or lightly stamped surfaces cannot reproduce.

04

THE BAIL

The bail is the connection between pendant and chain, and it takes constant friction during wear. A quality medal should not ignore one of the most heavily stressed components of the necklace.

05

THE CHAIN

A substantial pendant deserves a chain selected to support it. Consider chain width, construction, length, strength, and whether the chain visually matches the weight of the medal.

06

WHO MADE IT

Ask whether the seller actually manufactures the jewelry or simply resells a finished piece. Knowing who makes it matters when you're evaluating quality, personalization, service, and accountability.

SUBSTANTIAL BY DESIGN

THICKNESS IS ONE OF THE EASIEST DIFFERENCES TO FEEL.

A medal can look impressive in a close-up photograph and still be surprisingly thin when it arrives.

That's why thickness is one of the first specifications worth checking before you buy.

MANY LIGHTWEIGHT MEDALS
≈ 1 MM
MESSAGES IN METAL STANDARD MEDAL
≈ 2.5 MM
The goal isn't simply to add metal. It's to create a medal that feels proportionate to the meaning behind it.
UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL

"GOLD COLOR" DOESN'T TELL YOU WHAT'S UNDERNEATH.

STERLING SILVER

Look for solid .925 sterling silver.

Sterling silver gives you solid precious metal throughout the medal. It can naturally tarnish with time, but it can also be cleaned and polished appropriately.

SOLID GOLD

Ask whether it is actually solid gold.

Solid 14K gold means the body of the medal itself is gold—not simply a gold-colored finish over another material.

PLATED

Ask what the base metal is.

A plated piece can still be very well made. What matters is knowing what sits beneath the finish. Our plated Saint Christopher medals begin with a solid sterling silver base.

LOOK CLOSER

THE STORY IS IN THE RELIEF.

The traditional Saint Christopher image contains a surprising amount of detail: Christopher carrying the Christ Child, water, landscape, clothing, facial features, and surrounding lettering.

Deeper relief creates stronger highlights and shadows and allows those details to remain visually distinct instead of becoming one shallow surface.

A good photograph should let you see the depth—not hide the lack of it.
BUILT AS A COMPLETE NECKLACE

DON'T JUDGE THE PENDANT AND IGNORE EVERYTHING HOLDING IT.

01

THE BAIL

The bail moves against the chain every time the necklace moves. That makes it one of the highest-friction parts of the entire piece.

Our Saint Christopher medals use a color-matched reinforced stainless-steel bail designed with everyday wear in mind.

02

THE CHAIN

Our standard necklace includes a 2.5mm rounded box chain in stainless steel for strength.

It is color-matched to the medal and available in 20", 24", and 28" lengths. Sterling silver and solid 14K gold chains are also available upon request.

MADE FOR ONE PERSON

THE FRONT CARRIES THE SYMBOL. THE BACK CAN CARRY YOUR MESSAGE.

Personalization should feel like part of the jewelry—not an afterthought added at the end.

A name, date, short message, or meaningful phrase can turn a familiar symbol into something connected to a particular person and a particular moment.

The best Saint Christopher medal isn't simply the one with the most detail. It's the one that means something to the person carrying it.
ASK WHO MAKES IT

BUYING FROM THE MAKER CHANGES THE CONVERSATION.

Many jewelry websites sell finished products manufactured elsewhere. There is nothing inherently wrong with that—but it is worth knowing what you're buying.

Messages in Metal manufactures our jewelry in Great Falls, Montana. Casting, engraving, personalization, finishing, and inspection happen here.

When you have a question or a custom request, you're dealing with the people who actually make the jewelry.

BEFORE YOU BUY

SEVEN QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING.

01

What is the medal actually made from?

02

How thick is the medal?

03

Is the piece solid, hollow, or plated over another metal?

04

What type and width of chain is included?

05

How is the bail constructed?

06

Can the back be personalized?

07

Who actually manufactures the jewelry, and what happens if there's a problem?

WHY QUALITY MATTERS

SOME GIFTS ARE MEANT TO GO WITH THEM.

Saint Christopher medals are often given at moments of transition: graduation, travel, a first car, college, deployment, a move, or the beginning of a new chapter.

The message is often bigger than the jewelry itself:

Wherever you're going, I want you protected. And I want you to know someone is thinking about you.

If you're choosing a piece meant to carry that message for years, quality is worth paying attention to.
