According to Christian tradition, Christopher was a man of extraordinary strength who devoted himself to helping travelers cross a dangerous river.
One day, he carried a small child across. As they made their way through the water, the child became impossibly heavy. Christopher later learned that the child was Christ—and that he had carried the weight of the world upon his shoulders.
His name came to mean “Christ-bearer.” Over the centuries, Saint Christopher became known as the patron saint of travelers, and his medal became a symbol of protection and safe passage.
